Biotechnology Lab Activity at Mercedes College

August 7, 2024

Recently, our Laboratory Manager here at Chisholm, Albert Raso, recently led a biotechnology lab activity for the Year 12 ATAR Human Biology students at Mercedes College. Mr Raso brought a miniPCR machine and blueGel electrophoresis system, allowing Mercedes’ students to gain hands-on experience with advanced biotechnology techniques.

The lab activity focused on the genetic basis of cystic fibrosis and molecular diagnostic tests. Students worked with DNA samples from newborn twins, using PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) to amplify the CFTR gene, followed by Gel Electrophoresis to determine whether the samples contained a full-length CFTR gene or a mutated gene with a deletion. This hands-on experience with advanced biotechnology techniques reinforced their understanding of genetics and the ethical implications of molecular diagnostics.
