Celebrating Chinese Language and Culture

September 17, 2026

Following his outstanding achievement as the Winner of the 2026 CLTAWA Mandarin Speaking Competition, Sebastian and I were honoured to be invited to the inaugural Western Australia Chinese Language Day and Chinese Consulate-General Open Day at the Chinese Consulate-General in Perth on Saturday 12 September.

The event provided a wonderful opportunity to celebrate Chinese language and culture through a range of traditional arts, cultural activities and experiences. It was also a valuable opportunity for Sebastian to further connect with the Chinese community and broaden his understanding of Chinese culture.

Sebastian shares his reflections on this memorable experience below:

My experience at the Chinese Consulate was a fun and enjoyable experience! I participated in many exciting activities, including lacquer fan painting, guzheng and diabolo tutorials, 3D sugar printing, character-sorting games and calligraphy.

I found Chinese language and culture fascinating. I enjoyed learning about the different meanings of Chinese characters and how they are written. I also enjoyed learning about Chinese traditions, festivals and food.

The most memorable part of the day was lunch, with its wonderful variety of delicious traditional dishes! I think this experience really benefited me because it helped me feel more connected to the Chinese community and gave me the opportunity to learn more about Chinese culture.

Overall, I had an amazing time at the Consulate and hope I get the opportunity to come back!
