A Week of Culture, Community & Celebration

Languages Week at Chisholm Catholic College is a joyful celebration of culture, community and the rich linguistic diversity embraced by our students. The Centre for International Languages was permeated with colours, flavours and cultural pride.

Students from Years 7–12 immersed themselves in Chinese, French and Italian traditions through food, excursions, crafts and cooking. This annual celebration strengthens cultural understanding, highlights the joy of learning languages and inspires students to embrace global citizenship.

Chinese Activities

Our Year 11 and 12 Chinese ATAR students kicked off Languages Week by preparing an authentic Chinese meal and sharing it with staff. Year 10 and Year 7 students enjoyed freshly made BBQ pork buns, while our Year 7s also explored the beautiful tradition of Chinese paper cutting, creating the characters 福 (good fortune) and 春 (spring). These symbols carried our heartfelt wish that every member of the Chisholm community would be 温暖如春, which means to flourish like the fresh growth of springtime.

Year 9 students experienced authentic Chinese cuisine on their restaurant excursion, while our Year 8 students enjoyed an unforgettable day in Perth’s Chinatown.

From hands-on cultural experiences to shared meals and joyful discoveries, Languages Week brought Chinese language and culture to life.

French Activities

Year 7 French: Cultural Poster Activity: Students created posters showcasing French landmarks, traditions, and cultural icons.

Year 8 French: Crepe Making: A hands‑on cooking session filled the room with sweet aromas as students prepared traditional French crepes.

Italian Activities

Year 7 Italian: Cultural Poster: Students designed posters celebrating Italian culture.

Year 8 Italian: Bocce, Bruschetta Making & Dolce: A delicious cooking activity where students prepared bruschetta and Italian sweets. They also played bocce.

Year 9 Italian

Year 9 Italian classes embraced la dolce vita during an exciting Scopa tournament and gelato tasting experience! Students put their strategy and teamwork to the test playing Scopa, a traditional Italian card game that has brought families and friends together for generations. They then enjoyed authentic Gelato and Sorbetto, Italy’s famous frozen treats, savoured by Italians year-round as a much-loved part of everyday life. It was a delicious and memorable way to experience Italian culture beyond the classroom.

Year 10 Italian

Our Year 10 Italian class has been learning about Italian history and culture. During Languages Week, we have been watching “La Vita è Bella”, a Holocaust drama/comedy featuring Academy award-winning actor Roberto Benigni. We also enjoyed gelato treats.

Year 11 & 12 Italian – Cooking: Carbonara, Amatriciana

Combined senior classes cooked iconic Italian dishes, celebrating tradition through flavour and teamwork.

Languages Week continues to be one of the most anticipated events of the school year. Through food, creativity, excursions and shared experiences, students deepen their appreciation for global cultures and strengthen their sense of belonging within our diverse community.
