Chaplain’s Corner – Homily for Year 11 Students

September 4, 2025

Lk 22:24-30

In today’s Gospel Reading from Luke, we find the disciples in the midst of a disagreement about something that probably sounds familiar to all of us: greatness. It’s the night before Jesus’ death, and instead of focusing on the mission ahead, the disciples start arguing about who is the greatest among them. They’re trying to figure out who holds the highest position in their group. It’s like a competition for status and we can imagine them each trying to prove why they deserve to be at the top.

But Jesus, as He always does, steps in and turns everything upside down.

He tells them, “The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them… but not so with you. Rather, let the greatest among you become as the youngest and the leader as one who serves.”

What does this mean?

Jesus is saying that greatness in the Kingdom of God is not about power, prestige, or positions of authority. It’s not about who can command the most respect or control others. Instead, true greatness is found in serving others. In fact, the greatest among you is the one who is willing to humble themselves and serve those around them.

Let’s think about that for a moment. Imagine how different the world would be if people cared more about serving others than about being served. It’s not about showing off or proving ourselves to be better than others. It’s about being there for others, lifting them up and supporting them in whatever way we can. Now, why is this message especially important for you, Year 11 students, as you near the end of another year of your high school journey?

As you move forward, remember that the world will often tell you that success and greatness come from power, wealth, status, or recognition. But Jesus is saying, “Don’t buy into that. Greatness comes from serving, from humbling yourself and from lifting others up.” At Chisholm Catholic College, you’ve been formed not just academically but in character. You’ve been taught to be people of integrity, compassion and respect. As you will move into Year 12 and beyond, your leadership will be tested. Your ability to serve others, to put others first, and to lead with kindness and humility will be what truly sets you apart. The world needs more leaders like that – people who are not just concerned with climbing the ladder, but with helping others along the way.
