Wednesday 29 October – Luke 13:22-30
Today’s Gospel might sound a bit confronting at first. Jesus says, “Strive to enter through the narrow door, because many will try to enter and will not be able.” It’s one of those readings that makes us pause and think: What is Jesus really trying to tell us here?
Let’s break it down in a way that makes sense for us – especially here at Chisholm Catholic College, where we’re all striving to grow in faith, in learning and in community.
When Jesus talks about the “narrow door,” He isn’t trying to scare us or say that God wants to keep people out. He’s inviting us to make a real effort – to live with purpose, not just go through the motions.
Think about a sport, a musical instrument or even a big exam. You can’t just show up on the day and expect to be amazing. You have to train, practice and stay committed even when it’s hard. The same is true for our faith and the way we live our lives.
Jesus is saying: “Don’t just talk about being a good person – live it. Don’t just assume you’re on the right path because you go to church or go to a Catholic school. Make the effort every day to love others, to forgive, to include, to choose what’s right, even when it’s not easy.”
Another challenging part of the Gospel is when Jesus says that some people will knock on the door later and say, “We ate and drank with you,” but the door won’t be opened. Again, He’s not being harsh. He’s being honest.
It’s easy to say, “I’ll be a better person later,” or “I’ll take faith seriously when I’m older.” But Jesus is telling us: Now is the time. The choices you make now shape who you’re becoming. Even in Year 8, you’re building the kind of person you’re going to be.
The Gospel ends with a surprise: “People will come from the east and west, the north and south and take their places at the feast in the kingdom of God.” In other words, heaven is not a private club – it’s open to anyone who chooses to live with love and humility.
At Chisholm, you might look around and think, “Who’s the most popular? Who’s the smartest? Who’s the best at sport?” But in God’s eyes, what matters is: Who is kind? Who lifts others up? Who’s trying to live the way Jesus taught, even when it’s hard?
So, what can you do this week?
- Notice the narrow door moments – when it’s easier to gossip but you stay kind. When it’s easier to ignore someone but you include them. When it’s easier to follow the crowd but you choose what’s right.
- Pray for strength – Jesus doesn’t expect perfection. He just wants effort. Ask Him to help you.
- Encourage each other – no one walks this path alone. You’ve got your teachers, your friends, your families and Jesus with you.
The narrow door might seem tough but it leads to the most amazing life. A life of purpose, of peace, of love and ultimately, of joy with God.
Let’s be the kind of people who don’t just talk the talk but walk the walk, even when the path is narrow.
