Chaplain’s Corner – “That They May All Be One”

November 13, 2025

John 17:20–26

In today’s Gospel, we hear something very special – a prayer from Jesus himself. He’s talking to God the Father and he’s praying not just for his friends sitting around him but for all of us. He says: “I pray also for those who will believe in me… that they may all be one.” That means Jesus is praying for you. Right here, right now – at Chisholm Catholic College, in your classes, on the sports field, with your friends and family – Jesus is praying for your unity, your connection, your love for one another.

When Jesus prays that “they may all be one,” he isn’t saying we should all be the same.
He doesn’t want a world of identical people who think, act or look the same. He wants us to be united in love, even when we’re different – just like the Father, Son and Spirit are perfectly one in love, yet each unique.

In a school community like Chisholm, that means being able to appreciate people who are different – the quiet ones, the sporty ones, the creative ones, the ones who make you laugh and even the ones who might annoy you sometimes. Unity is choosing to include, not exclude.

Let’s be honest: being one isn’t always easy. Sometimes there’s gossip, arguments, friendship fallouts or people who get left out. But Jesus doesn’t just tell us to be united -he prays for us to be. He knows we can’t do it on our own. So next time you find it hard to forgive someone or you’re tempted to judge someone unfairly, remember: Jesus has already prayed for you. He’s on your side, helping you to love when it’s tough.

Jesus says that when we live in unity, “the world will know that you sent me.” That means people will come to believe in God when they see our love in action. It’s not through big miracles or fancy speeches – it’s through kindness, respect and compassion. When someone feels included at lunch, when you speak up for a friend, when you forgive instead of fight – that’s God’s love made visible. That’s what makes our school, our community and our world stronger.

So, Year 9s, as you keep growing and finding your way, remember Jesus’ prayer for you:

“Father, may they be one.”

Ask yourself this week:

  • Who can I include that I usually overlook?
  • How can I help bring peace to a friendship or group?
  • How can I reflect God’s love in my words and actions?

If each of us does just one small act of unity, the love of God will shine right through us -just as Jesus hoped it would.

Lord Jesus,
You prayed that we might all be one.
Help us to live that prayer in our school, our families and our friendships.
Teach us to forgive quickly, include generously and love deeply.
May our unity show your love to the world.
