This week, Chisholm Catholic College had the privilege of welcoming three incredible educators from Sacred Heart School in Beagle Bay – Kasey, Doris and Suryani. Their visit highlighted the deeply enriching exchange between our communities as they worked alongside our Design and Technology team, honing skills that they will bring back to their own students in Beagle Bay.
One of the most memorable experiences was the opportunity for our students to participate in a cultural lesson led by the Beagle Bay staff. They shared stories of the Dampier Peninsula, introducing our students to the natural beauty of driftwood and shells from their region, which they used to create stunning wind chimes. This hands-on experience connected our students to the heritage of Nyul Nyul country in a truly unique way.
We were also honoured to hear Doris’ personal story. As a member of the Stolen Generation, Doris spoke candidly about her deep connection to Beagle Bay and her journey of faith. Her story, including a powerful experience with Sister Bernadette of the Sisters of Saint John of God, resonated with us all, reminding us of the resilience and enduring spirit of Indigenous communities.
While Beagle Bay staff enriched our lives here at Chisholm, two of our own, Ms Erika Hadfield and Ms Paige Alderdice, travelled to Beagle Bay to lend their support. They brought their vibrant energy to the classrooms there and were immersed in the culture and life of the community. Their journey is a testament to the shared spirit of generosity that underpins our partnership and I am certain they received just as much from the community as they gave.
The bonds we have forged with the Sacred Heart community and the Nyul Nyul people are a treasured part of our Mission here at Chisholm. We look forward to 2025 and to the future of this City-Country Partnership, knowing that the journey ahead holds even greater learning, connection and growth.
