Over the past week, staff and students from Chisholm have undertaken our most recent visit and immersion to the Pilbara and particularly St Luke’s College in Karratha. The origins of this important extra-curricular experience and engagement project between our two schools started in the early 2020’s but was hampered by the onset of COVID-19. As a former Principal of St Luke’s, I have always believed that amazing possibilities and opportunities could be developed through a sister-school arrangement, founded in the common connections that exist.
Brother Olly Pickett who was a long-serving staff member of St Mark’s College, was fundamental to the establishment and building of St Luke’s, that began 1987. His contribution to both schools has been formidable and he speaks often and proudly of his time at both. I enjoyed the challenges and experiences of a remarkable eight years at St Luke’s and equally, a fantastic twelve years here at Chisholm. Leading both schools has added to that shared connection.
In accompanying Brother Olly for the first few days of the Immersion this year, we shared much in the way of fond memories. Brother Olly was honoured by the College for his contribution and is now Patron for one of their four Houses – Nickol House. As part of the visit, Chisholm were able to present a beautifully designed steel Fire Pit to the Principal, Mr Adrian Correria, to be situated in their commemorative garden.
Once again, this year’s travelling group of students and staff engaged in an array of activities and experiences, showcasing the amazing environment and contrasts of the north. For many of our students, the whole experience including time on country, visiting Karijini National Park and Murujuga National Park (Burrup Peninsula), Cossack, Point Samson, Dampier and the College itself, will long be remembered for years to come.
Thank you to Mr Swindells and the accompanying staff Miss Dichierra, Miss Re and Mr Panizza and Brother Olly along with the staff of St Luke’s. We’re deeply indebted for your time and commitment and I know it is deeply appreciated by all the students. I hope that in years to come the association between the two schools endures and will continue to forge a new shared history.
Mr John Bormolini
Principal
