Today is World Teachers’ Day, where we acknowledge the contribution made to the lives of all children and young people by those who are called to teach.
We know that teaching is a vocation, not just a profession. At Chisholm we certainly embody that notion and together we help to guide and educate our students in ways that realise their given talents, including an understanding of service to their school and wider community.
Pope Francis once said: “One does not teach what one knows, but what one is… we transmit to others what we are inside. It is not enough to fill one’s head with ideas, that is not educating; to educate is to transmit life …to be a teacher is to live a mission.”
Recently I attended the QCE Awards and Service breakfast where one of the key parts was recognising those staff in our system who were celebrating 30, 40 and even 50 years in Catholic education. This year, we acknowledged two Chisholm staff members, Maria Gaspar-Fernandes and Evie Morris, for their long-standing contribution and we congratulate both of them on their great service and achievement.
As many of our Year 12 students focus on their final stages of secondary schooling and their minds turn to the next stage in their lives, it’s an important pause for us to reflect on the impact of good teaching and the significant dedication of those who work so hard and contribute so much in this space, at Chisholm.
I thank you for all that you, teaching and non-teaching staff, do and your commitment to delivering such a high standard of education to the young people entrusted into our care.
