Today we acknowledge and celebrate the foundation of our College, formed in 1989 through the amalgamation of St Thomas Aquinas and St Mark’s College. Importantly it is also when we acknowledge and remember our Patron, Caroline Chisholm, for her inspirational life and contribution to early Australian society. She was born in 1808 and died after a long illness in 1877 and was one of the great pioneers and agents for change in the early colonial history of Australia.
Each time we say ‘Caroline Chisholm – Pray for us’, we are recognising the promises of Jesus for us in our community and Caroline’s Christian faith. Caroline Chisholm’s vast works for social justice were motivated by two very strong beliefs: her commitment to the importance of family life; and her deep love of the Gospel.
Caroline Chisholm tackled the causes of her day with confidence and courage, unafraid that she was perceived as stepping into an arena not befitting a woman. She was determined to do all in her power to create a society where people worked together, helped each other and valued relationships.
The qualities shown by Caroline Chisholm make her a worthy model for all of us to emulate, by working to help make a positive difference in the lives of others especially those in need. That’s why today, like every day for the past 35 years, let’s display the College’s Values of Character, Learning and Compassion as we enjoy our Chisholm Day together.
In doing so we support the fundraising activities of the day and know that all the funds raised will support people in need.
Today also marks Mr Bormolini’s 12th and final Chisholm Day. On behalf of all the student body, to make your final Chisholm Day as enjoyable as possible, we all thought we’d chip in and set you up with a little budget for the day. Here is a bag of coins for you to spend!
Whether it’s your first, your last or somewhere in between make the most of what today has to offer.
Happy Chisholm Day Everyone!
