FROM THE PRINCIPAL – Innovation in Action: Empowering Excellence at the College

September 5, 2025

This week, our College community witnessed two compelling examples of how innovation is not just taught, it is experienced. These moments show how technology and forward-thinking educational practices are shaping a future of excellence through real-world applications that students can see, engage with and learn from.

On Monday, over 1800 staff and students came together for our whole-school photo – a tradition held every six years. But this year, we did away with the towering scaffolds and logistical gymnastics of the past. Instead, we embraced digital innovation, using advanced imaging technology to construct the photo virtually. This shift not only streamlined the process, but also reflected our commitment to integrating smart solutions into everyday school life.

Meanwhile, our Stellatus classes continued to showcase excellence in creative and critical thinking. Early this year, these students took part in the national Computational and Algorithmic Thinking (CAT) Competition. The competition is designed to develop students’ problem-solving skills through algorithmic thinking, encouraging them to create informal algorithms and apply them to increasingly complex data sets. Students engage with logic, abstraction and pattern recognition – skills that are not only foundational in mathematics but increasingly vital in a world shaped by digital transformation. Participation in the CAT competition not only strengthens mathematical thinking but also builds confidence in tackling unfamiliar problems – an essential skill in today’s dynamic world.

From capturing our whole-school photo using advanced imaging technology to engaging in national competitions that challenge algorithmic thinking, our students are seeing innovation in action – both in tradition and in learning. At Chisholm, we see these opportunities as part of our broader commitment to nurturing creative, analytical and resilient learners. In our pursuit of equipping students with the skills for the world beyond school, we value experiences that foster curiosity, adaptability and the capacity to solve real-world problems. These experiences sit alongside other innovative teaching and learning practices at Chisholm, including the use of artificial intelligence to support personalised learning, virtual reality to simulate real-world environments and collaborative digital platforms that foster global connections and teamwork. These innovations are not just about keeping pace – they’re about preparing our students to thrive, lead and shape the future with confidence and purpose.
