Last week, Chisholm hosted its annual Mathematics Week.
The week kicked off with a Maths quiz in PCG, where students attempted to complete the numbers game from the ABC show Letters and Numbers. This quiz was the students last opportunity to win House Points before the House Shield is awarded.
Each lunchtime saw various activities hosted by the Mathematics Department including Maths in Art and Craft, Tangrams, Soma Cubes and Maths Coffee Shop.
On Wednesday, Ms Sarah Zhang hosted Maths Magic. Students were shown a magic maths card trick. This involved picking a number between 1 and 30 without revealing their chosen number. They were shown five maths magic cards, each containing 15 numbers and had to answer yes or no as to whether their number was on the card. From this, it was able to be deduced as to what their secret number was. This was a useful exercise to demonstrate how tree diagrams work.
Students were also shown some more maths magic in the form of the one cut theorem. This is a mathematical rule that states that any straight sided shape can be created out of paper by folding and using only one cut. By folding paper, they were able to create star shapes by making only one cut into their paper.
An enormous thank you must be extended to our wonderful Mathematics Department for hosting these mathematical activities for our students. Ms Sarah Zhang and Mr Lucas Phillips must be commended for the enormous amount of work they have put into organising the activities that were available to the students throughout the week. The students must be also commended for the enthusiasm they brought to each activity.
