On Tuesday, the 2024 Mock Trial Teams took on St Mary’s at the Supreme Court of WA in Round 1. It was a criminal trial involving an alleged assault of an elderly man in a park by a lawyer who hit him and made him fall… or was it just an accident when one tripped and fell on the other? All witnesses were based on TV characters which made it interesting. One team the ‘Advocatoes’ was Prosecution. They won 138 to 127 but he was acquitted as there was reasonable doubt. The other team ‘Law & Order M.O.C.K’ was Defence and they won 135 to 131.5.
The judge was particularly impressed with the teamwork of barristers Maia Securo and Gabriela Magalhaes and their astute answers. It was good to see our new Year 10 team members take on the challenge of trial night under the guidance of senior students and to see seven weeks of preparation come to fruition for all students.
We are very proud of all our team members for a strong performance and high standard for their Round 1 trial – well done! Round 2 will be held early next term.
Thanks to all our spectators and supporters. We welcome back our Coach the Hon John McKechnie KC and congratulate him on his Australia Day honour of Officer of the Order of Australia.
