Congratulations to both our Mock Trial teams on their double win against Wesley College at the Supreme Court on Monday night.
This was the shortest time to prepare we have ever had, a mere eight school days, and being able to perform was a win in itself. So to win in both court rooms was a fantastic team and individual effort by each student, well done!
The case involved an alleged threat which was done with intent to ‘pervert the course of justice’ by an Uber driver to scare off a witness in an upcoming trial. In both court rooms, the verdict was Not Guilty. Law & Disorder as Defence won 115.5 to 104.5. Suits as Prosecution won 115 to 111.
One judge commented that in her years of judging, the teams in her court room on trial night were some of ‘the best prepared, presented and conducted (trials)’ that she had seen. She also commented that witness Emily Travis withstood cross examination (for 14 minutes) ‘with grace and determination’. All our witnesses were unflustered and held their ground. A special mention also to Hanna Burgmans who was a confident Prosecution witness and wouldn’t let the Barrister put words in her mouth. Trinity Jones developed her skills in her first time as Barrister and enjoyed cross examination. Maddy Adams, Eleni Chapman and Sabelle Chami were composed Barristers with clear logical points. Our Solicitors took copious notes and our Court Orderly and Judge’s Associate followed all court procedures formally.
We thank our Coach Honourable John McKechnie KC AO who replied to many drafts over that short time period including over the weekend. We also thank Mr Dhue for attending as a supervisor on trial night, it was a very long day. It was great to see so many parents and spectators there.
Please join us in congratulating each and every team member. We wish them all the best for Round 3 which is the last of the open rounds and will be held later this term.
