On Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 August, a team of Year 11 Computer Science students participated in the annual national PECAN+ which is a Cyber Security Capture the Flag (CTF) competition developed and managed by the School of Science team at Edith Cowan University. The event was aimed at Australian high school students in Years 10 and above.
The ‘Chisholm Chasers’ comprising of Verity Jansen, Xavier Scott, Joshua Bright and Cooper Hong scored well, achieving 32nd place against 148 teams across Australia. Challenges varied in difficulty and points awarded, students learnt new skills in white hat ethical security hacking, which included digital forensics, cryptography, steganography, penetration testing, SQL injection, reverse engineering, web exploits and code analysis, to name a few. Chisholm students spoke with mentors from the ECU Cyber Security faculty and people working in the industry from CyberCX and the Australian Signals Directorate. It was an exciting competition and lots of fun.
