The 2023 English Learning Area Theatre Season kicked off in great style with a visit to the State Theatre for a Sunday matinee show. Sixteen Year 11 and 12 Literature students enjoyed a lively and clever reimagining of the classic French romantic tragedy, Cyrano de Bergerac, by 19th century novelist, Edmond Rostand. The drama, written and performed by Virginia Gay and a tight, dynamic cast, proved to be a great hit with students, some of whom had never attended live theatre before. A sharp, witty script delivered laugh-out-loud humour, hilarious and poignant performances, verbal duels and a memorable chorus translating Rostand’s narrative for today’s world in an arresting and immersive way. The experience was exhilarating and left students thirsting for more.
