On Thursday, we came together as a Chisholm community to celebrate R U OK? Day, an annual national day of action dedicated to encouraging connection, meaningful conversations and support for mental wellbeing.
Organised by the Student Wellbeing Committee, the day provided students with opportunities before school and recess to connect with friends, participate in activities and have meaningful conversations. With the support of our wonderful school Counsellor, Ms Sophie Anderson, one of the key activities was our Conversation Table, where students could take the time to have genuine conversations with members of the Wellbeing Committee.
The area outside the e-Learning Centre was transformed with upbeat music and a bright, welcoming setup that encouraged students to get involved. Students could create positive chalk drawings, write Gratitude Cards to show appreciation for people in their lives and make paper chains filled with positive affirmations. It was wonderful to see so many students participating and adding their own messages of positivity and encouragement to the day.
R U OK? Day is about more than simply asking the question, “Are you okay?” It is about genuinely caring about the answer and being willing to listen. While R U OK? Day provides an important opportunity to highlight mental wellbeing, looking out for one another is something we can practise throughout the entire year. Sometimes, a simple conversation, a kind message or letting someone know that you are there for them can make a meaningful difference.
It was beautiful to see our Chisholm Community come together, participate and support the message behind the day. As Wellbeing Prefect, I am incredibly grateful to everyone who contributed, participated and helped make the day such a success.
On behalf of the Student Wellbeing Committee, I would like to thank our entire Chisholm Community for getting involved and the wonderful Zoe, the Wellbeing Assistant Prefect, with a special thank you to Ms Rodrigues and Mrs Lewis for their support and for helping us organise such a successful and meaningful day.
While R U OK? Day may only happen once a year, our commitment to looking out for one another should continue every day.
Lauren Kingston
Wellbeing Prefect
