Since 2012, the Foundation for International Space Education (FISE) has conducted the annual United Space School in Houston, Texas. This prestigious three week programme, held from 18 July to 4 August, offers students aged 15-19 a deep dive into the intricacies of human space travel. By fostering international cooperation and teamwork, the curriculum prepares participants for its centrepiece: a simulated manned mission to Mars. Through its partnership with NASA, the programme is hosted at the Johnson Space Centre, where students are afforded the opportunity to reside with host families, facilitating a direct immersion into Texan culture and the American lifestyle.
Inspired by previous Australian alumni of the United Space School, I decided to apply for the 2026 cohort. The initial phase proved particularly rigorous, requiring advanced innovative capabilities and problem solving skills. After being shortlisted, I was invited to attend an interview session hosted by the FISE board members. Following a lengthy wait period, I received confirmation of my selection.
The United Space School emphasises collaboration and cultivates international professional relationships. Participating in this programme provides a unique networking platform with global peers. Furthermore, the opportunity to attend workshops run by accredited NASA engineers, astronauts and experts serves as a profound source of inspiration, offering a deeper perspective on the multidisciplinary efforts required to explore the frontiers of science.
I look forward to representing both Chisholm and Australia at the 2026 United Space School.
