To Read or Not To Read: Why Literacy Still Matters

July 24, 2025

Library and Information Week | 28 July – 3 August 2025

This year’s Library and Information Week invites us to reflect on a simple yet powerful theme: To Read or Not To Read: Literacy Matters. Reading is a beloved pastime for many Australians, but for others, the choice to read isn’t quite so straightforward. Factors such as socio-economic challenges, learning difficulties, limited access to books or technology, and the pressures of a busy life can all make reading feel out of reach.

At Chisholm, we are proud to help bridge that gap. Our well-resourced, professionally staffed library is a welcoming space where reading is not only encouraged, it’s celebrated. Through our fortnightly recreational reading programme for Years 7 to 9, students are supported by teacher librarians to explore new genres, discover diverse voices and build positive reading habits. Our revitalised non-fiction section has been especially popular, with students diving into topics ranging from history and science to sport and social issues.

What is Library and Information Week?

Held annually, Library and Information Week shines a spotlight on the important work of library and information professionals across the country. First celebrated in 1968 as Australian Library Week, it continues to highlight the vital role libraries play in fostering lifelong learning, equitable access to information and of course – cultivating a love of reading.
