Try-a-Trade – Bricklaying & Carpentry

May 16, 2024

Last week, 10 of our Year 10 students attended a three day course at Skill Hire Forrestfield as part of Construction Training Fund (CTF’s) Try-a-Trade Program. These programmes are designed to give high school students an introduction to a trade career and those chosen were wanting to find out if a Carpentry or Bricklaying trade was right for them. The students worked together on a real-life project – building a deck! The first day involved each student building an individual 8 course pier and all agreed that bricklaying was tiring work, but many of the boys enjoyed the experience and are now considering it as a career pathway. The next day, the students constructed low level walls between the piers and then used carpentry tools and materials to prepare for the final day which was constructing the pergola.

As you can see from the photos of the finished product, the boys did an amazing job of the pergola project. They embraced the experience and learnt many new skills that even if they do not become a bricklayer or carpenter, they will use later in life. A special thank you also to Mr Palmer and Mr Tickner who assisted at this excursion.
