Understanding Australian Readers: How Can We Inspire More Reading?

February 20, 2025

A recent study, Understanding Australian Readers, by Australia Reads and BehaviourWorks Australia, explores the factors influencing reading habits across the country. The research highlights a concerning trend—more than a quarter of Australians didn’t read or listen to a single book in a year. However, encouragingly, half of Australians express a desire to read more often.

The report identifies key barriers to recreational reading and suggests strategies to encourage more people to pick up a book. By understanding reader and non-reader behaviors, we can develop more effective ways to promote reading, from tailored messaging to practical interventions.

At our library, we are committed to fostering a love of reading. One of our key initiatives is WILD (Words Improve Life Dramatically), a fortnightly recreational reading programme run through English classes for Years 7–10. Through WILD, students have dedicated time to explore books of their choice, building reading habits that will last a lifetime. Whether through this programme, book recommendations, or engaging displays, we’re here to help every student find their next great read!
