On Friday 24 April, the Year 11 ATAR Geography class went to Kings Park to complete bushfires fieldwork. Their aim was to determine a fire danger rating for several sites and closure plan for the Naturescape playground.
At first, students were introduced to the case study of the 2023 bushfires that were deliberately lit in Kings Park, threatening homes and hospitals. They then split into groups to collect data on the weather, fuel and topography of several sites within Kings Park.
Using all the data they collected, they were able to ascertain a fire danger rating for Kings Park, and advise if the Naturescape playground, which is adjacent to the research sites, should be closed based upon their results.
After lunch, students studied fire management techniques which are used in Kings Park, trying on fire fighting gear, operating radios and using fire fighting equipment.
