On Friday 31 July, the Year 11 ATAR Geography class went to Fremantle on a field trip to investigate tourism as part of a globalisation unit of study. After meeting in the city, we travelled by train to Fremantle, to evaluate the ease with which international tourists can get around Perth and Fremantle. From the train we could see the impacts containerisation has had on worldwide trade and the passenger port.
After a quick coffee stop on the cappuccino strip, we went to the Fremantle Visitor Centre, where the team leader for visitor information services spoke to us on the services they offer to tourists, the busiest times of the year for the tourism industry and the impacts cruise ship passengers have on Fremantle.
Students then conducted a land use survey through Fremantle, to estimate the percentage of shops and buildings that tourists would use. We completed the land use survey at the markets, where students were able to enjoy lunch.
Following lunch, we made our way to the Garde Hotel. The Garde Hotel is a brand new five-star hotel, linked to the Warders hotel and Emily Taylor restaurant. We were given a ‘behind the scenes’ tour, and were given statistics on costs of rooms and services, numbers of visitors, visitor preferences and marketing methods.
