On Wednesday 12 March, our Year 11 Visual Arts ATAR students had the opportunity to participate in an immersive incursion led by renowned local portrait artist, Rachelle Dusting. This hands-on workshop introduced students to the world of oil painting, a first-time experience for many, guiding them through fundamental techniques essential to portraiture.
Throughout the day, students engaged in three structured activities, each building upon their technical skills and understanding of the medium. They began by exploring tonal value ranges, learning how to manipulate oil paint to create depth and contrast. Next, they experimented with dynamic colour mixing, discovering how to achieve vibrancy and harmony within their palettes. Finally, applying their newfound knowledge, they completed a detailed study of an eye, concentrating on accuracy in shape, value and colour.
The results were truly impressive, showcasing the students’ ability to quickly adapt to this challenging yet rewarding medium. We commend the Year 11 students for their dedication and enthusiasm throughout the incursion and look forward to seeing these newly honed skills shine in their upcoming portrait projects.
