Last Thursday, the Year 12 Geography students set out on an excursion to investigate some of the key issues shaping Perth’s urban environment. The focus of the day was on urban sprawl, waste management and the processes that influence the growth and health of our city.
The first stop was a visit to Ellenbrook, a suburb located in the Newer Growth Zone. Here, students assessed the impacts of rapid suburban development, including transport challenges, infrastructure demand and community planning. This case study provided a practical example of the issues that come with Perth’s expanding urban footprint.
Next, the group travelled to the West Metro Recycling Centre, where students toured the facility and gained an insight into the importance of correct waste sorting. Learning about the complex process of recycling highlighted both the challenges and the benefits of managing Perth’s growing waste problem.
The final part of the excursion took students into the heart of the Perth CBD. Walking through the city allowed students to explore the health of the CBD and observe the various urban processes at work, from revitalisation projects to the ongoing challenge of maintaining vibrancy in the city centre.
Overall, the excursion was a valuable opportunity for Year 12 students to connect classroom learning with real-world examples, deepening their understanding of Perth’s urban geography and the challenges the city faces in the future.
