On Tuesday 15 August, a few of us from Stellatus were lucky enough to represent our school at the 2025 STEM Showcase. What an exciting experience for each one of us! The showcase was packed with hands-on booths from schools across the region, and each had something unique to offer regarding science, technology, engineering and maths.
For our booth we showed off our model houses that we designed to withstand a natural disaster. Throughout Term 1, the Year 7 Stellatus class worked on investigating the impact of natural disasters on buildings and current building designs that are “disaster proof”. Once the research was complete, we then had to design and build a prototype of a “disaster proof” building. We could have chosen floods, fire, cyclone or earthquake. Once the prototype was finished we tested our prototypes to see how well they did under pressure.
Throughout the day we were able to visit all booths and we did it all, from awesome space displays to a mini police forensic laboratory, where we learned how actual detectives solve crimes. They even had robot competitions, coding classes and hands-on experiments that made learning even more enjoyable.
One of the highlights of the day was a friendly “STEM Challenge” among the students and teachers. It got quite competitive and yes, we gave the teachers a run for their money!
Overall, the STEM Showcase was less about discovering facts and more about discovering how fun and creative STEM can be. We came home with new information and lots of inspiration for the future.
We would like to thank Ms Ng for her tireless efforts both in class and on the day to assist us in being well prepared to present our projects on the day.
