Harmony Day is a day where Australians come together to celebrate and acknowledge the many diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds that make up this great Nation. It encompasses our acknowledgement of the traditional First Nations inhabitants of Australia, along with subsequent settlers from various global backgrounds and the waves of migration throughout our recent history.
Chisholm Catholic College represents a perfect example of that diversity in our large multicultural mix of enrolment and families that form a wonderful educational community. A large proportion of our students and staff have backgrounds and origins from across various parts of the globe – all with their own histories and stories that shape that ancestry.
Although widely celebrated in all our schools, Harmony Day does have some extra significance at Chisholm where it has been strongly embraced over many years and clearly forms a part of a strong annual tradition in acknowledging and respecting ethnic diversity. It is particularly pleasing to see that it is not simply an acknowledgement of an idea for one day on the calendar, but rather broader understanding and intent to respect everyone in our community, a sense of belonging and peace.
Once again, our celebration today brought everyone together in a spirit of acceptance and fun. Our full school Assembly and parade today illustrated that beautifully.
