Congratulations to Taylor Jovanovic, who has been named the Year 7 winner of the 2026 GAWA Young Geographer of the Year Competition.

This year’s competition, Students for Sustainable Development, challenged students to investigate examples of sustainable development in Western Australia. Taylor focused her inquiry on “Saving Perth’s Water Supply through Desalination,” exploring how desalination can help address Perth’s ongoing challenge of water scarcity.

Taylor’s work demonstrated strong geographical inquiry, drawing on research and evidence to investigate the role of desalination in securing Perth’s water supply and considering its sustainability from environmental, social and economic perspectives.

It is fantastic to see a Year 7 student engaging so thoughtfully with an important issue facing our local community. A special thank you to Mrs Alice Mrazek-Scriven, who guided and supported Taylor throughout the process, and to Mrs Laura Billington, who coordinated Chisholm’s entries and submission to GAWA.

We are very proud of Taylor and this fantastic achievement.
